Our SFX collections were recorded with the best microphones including the Sanken CSS-5 stereo shotgun. This microphone has numerous L & R field modes for maximum flexibility. And it has amazing HF & LF and noise floor specs, which work perfectly in the Foley and game worlds!
The stereo normal mode provides an accurate, transparent stereo pick up of the targeted source. Stereo angle is approximately 115 degrees.
The wide mode provides a generous stereo pick up area and is ideal for ambience and sound effect recording for film sound design. Wide mode allows a 140 degree pick up area. We used both depending on the source.
The mono mode provides sharp directivity over a wide frequency range. Signal is accurately reproduced at the front of the microphone capsule while off-axis ambient sound is greatly reduced.
All were recorded with some degree of stereo, and will collapse properly
if/when needed for proper Foley imaging. You can’t pan a stereo field with information you don’t have. In these collections, it’s all there for you to manipulate and utilize.
